Clubs and Organization

National Junior Honors Society

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of True North Classical Academy is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each semester.

Piano for Beginners

Students will learn the basics of playing both hands, simple songs and reading piano music. Selections include Ode to Joy, Scarborough Fair, and common types of accompaniment for songs to be sung. By the end of the course a student will be ready to move to more challenging repertoire at an intermediate level.

Guitar for Beginners

Students will learn the basics of playing chords and melodies of simple songs and reading music. Selections include Ode to Joy, Greensleeves and common types of accompaniment for songs to be sung. By the end of the course a student will be ready to move to more challenging repertoire at an intermediate level.

Choir

The choir program offers a higher level of vocal repertoire for those students seeking to go beyond the standard curriculum. Selections include holiday classics, American patriotic songs, and chorale standards. Members develop soloing techniques and multiple-part harmonies as they progress through the program. Opportunities for performances include a Winter Recital, Holiday Show, Spring Recital and special presentations throughout the year.

Ensemble

The ensemble offers students the opportunity to explore the challenging orchestral music. Selections include Classical masterpieces, symphonic scores, and holiday classics. Members develop an understanding of arrangement through the various available instruments, and grow their soloing techniques within structured and improvisational settings. Opportunities for performances include a Winter Recital, Holiday Show, Spring Recital and special presentations throughout the year.

Judo

The Judo program is designed to develop both physical strength and great mental discipline. Students take instruction from world master, Pan-American and National Kata Champion, Sensei Roberto Alvarez. In judo, students learn techniques for takedowns from a standing position, as well as techniques that allow you to pin your opponent to the ground, control them, and apply various submission moves. Judo helps build student character in the following virtues: courtesy, courage, friendship, honesty, honor, modesty, respect, and self-control.

Service Club

True North service club seeks to explore the various opportunities for students to get involved in the community. Students are required to commit to 100 service hours during their High School tenure. These hours are centered on one or two “projects” that students take on. The True North Service Club provides a forum for discussion and venue to discuss ways for students to reach their goals. The True North Service Club also provides an opportunity for students to discuss ways to be a leader on campus, as service is not just to members of the surrounding community, but to the community of True North itself.

Robotics

Robotics club is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in STEM fields. Robotics club meets every Wednesday after school, and is designed for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students to robotics. The club uses predesigned kits (Vexiq and Vex edr). Students learn to use the components of the kits to build robots and learn to program their robots using the icon-based programming software. After they have mastered basic programming, club meetings involve students programming their robots to accomplish tasks and solve challenges. Problem solving, and logical thinking skills will be emphasized. Students work in pairs or small teams. Selected teams will participate in a Robotics competition.
